On January 29th, the White House announced that they were rescinding the proposed funding freeze.
The Trump administration’s attempted funding freeze has already resulted in chaos, confusion and concern for Kentuckians. The federal budget includes many funding streams that are critical to Kentuckians’ safety, health and well-being and that drive our economy. The exact impact of the order remains unclear, and a federal judge has temporarily blocked the freeze until at least Monday, Feb. 3.
Federal funding impacts the lives of students, veterans, seniors, people with disabilities and Kentuckians from every walk of life. A potential freeze raises questions about jobs, including the thousands of Kentuckians currently working on the federally funded infrastructure and energy projects across the state.
Federal funding in Kentucky goes to individuals and families, nonprofit organizations, businesses, colleges and universities, counties, cities and the state. The portion that is grants that go through the state budget in 2025 totals $22 billion. Office of Management and Budget communications indicate that the freeze “does not include assistance provided directly to individuals,” but contradictory information has been shared on some programs, and uncertainty remains.
