Child Care in Kentucky: Recent Policy Improvements and the Looming Funding Cliff

  • What Keeps Us Safe: Kentucky’s Incarceration Crisis and What Communities Really Need to Thrive
    If Kentucky was a country, we’d be ranked seventh in the world for our incarceration rate. Decades of “tough on crime” legislation has created a mass incarceration crisis in our state. In this session, we’ll explore how we got here, why a punitive system is harmful to us all and research-backed approaches that actually keep our communities safe.

For university students and those new to advocacy, this lunch session will set you up to start your own advocacy journey.

12:30 p.m. Keynote panel

KET’s Renee Shaw will moderate a panel on the power of the state budget to meet the needs of Kentuckians and build a prosperous  commonwealth. It will include experts and those with lived experience discussing housing, education health care and other vital issues in the commonwealth.

1:45 p.m. Breakouts

  • Kentucky’s Urgent Need for Affordable and Safe Housing
    Housing a human right, but affordable, safe and stable housing remains an urgent need across Kentucky. In this session, we’ll hear from advocates working on critical housing issues and discuss policy solutions at both the state and local levels.

  • SEEKing Equity: How Inadequate School Funding Is Failing Kentucky Students
    The funding gap between Kentucky’s wealthiest and poorest school districts is now worse than levels declared unconstitutional over 30 years ago. In this session, we’ll discuss school funding equity and hear from the Kentucky Student Voices Team, which is holding statewide community conversations to explore whether Kentucky is living up to its promise of a quality education for all students.
